Open letter to the ICF re. the Olympic program 2024
DKF har i dag sendt følgende henvendelse til ICF på baggrund af disse 2 nyheder: https://www.canoeicf.com/news/extreme-slalom-one-step-closer-olympics https://www.canoeicf.com/news/why-icf-supporting-extreme-slalom-olympics Proposed change to the Olympic program Paris 2024 It was with a great deal of surprise that we received information that ICF suggested to IOC moving athlete kvotas and medallions from sprint to extreme slalom. While we applaud an effort to renew the sport of canoeing and understand the need to react when an opportunity arises we feel that this suggestion takes canoeing in the wrong direction. The content of the suggestion itself will certainly damage the sprint and might also damage extreme slalom by introducing it to the Olympics before it has matured sufficiently. The process to the decision is equally flawed in many aspects. It is untimely and does not allow for NF to adapt its elite programs properly. It is not part of a long term development plan for canoeing in the Olympics. There has been no consultation of key stakeholders – in direct contradiction to the stated ICF policy and the code of conduct section I item 11. We strongly urge the ICF to withdraw this suggestion and instead launch a proper process including stakeholder consultation, democratic decision and a robust long term development strategy for the Olympic program. There is an urgent need to develop the format and presentation of canoe sprint – a discipline with a time proven appeal and large TV audience.
